File extended 2000 tax returns by the February 12 deadline

Tax Tip logo

In the days following the September 11 terrorist attacks, the IRS stepped in to provide some tax relief for affected taxpayers.  One provision gave certain taxpayers an additional 120 days to file their 2000 tax returns.

Who does it apply to? This relief applies to taxpayers directly affected by the terrorist attacks.  For example, this includes relief workers, the victims of the crashes, taxpayers who live or work in the disaster areas, and taxpayers with records maintained in the disaster areas.

File these returns by February 12, 2002. This 120-day filing extension applies to the following tax returns, previously on extension until October 15, 2001.

  • 2000 individual returns
  • 2000 gift tax returns
  • 2000 trust returns
  • 2000 partnership returns

If you fall into any of these categories and haven't yet filed your 2000 return, the February due date is quickly approaching.
