Use direct deposit for a faster tax refund

Tax Tip logo

Each year thousands of tax refunds are returned to the IRS because the post office can't deliver them.  That's because taxpayers failed to notify the IRS when they moved.  Or they simply wrote the wrong address on their tax return.  For some taxpayers, a better alternative might be the direct deposit method.  With this method, the IRS electronically transfers your refund directly into your bank account.

Here are several benefits of using direct deposit:

  • You'll generally receive your refund faster than with a paper check.

  • You'll receive your refund, even if you used an incorrect address on your return.

  • You won't have to worry about someone taking your refund check from your mailbox.

Caution: Even if you choose to have your refund directly deposited to your bank account, you still need to notify the IRS when you move.  Otherwise the IRS may not be able to contact you if there are problems or adjustments to your return.
